The LET’S TALK Outreach program provides advisory and consultancy support to educational settings catering for students who present with a primary language disorder. Students who are:
- Verified with Speech Language Impairment (SLI) in accordance with Department of Education and Training guidelines
- Verified under an associated disability category (e.g. ASD, II), where language difficulties are considered to be a primary barrier to a child’s learning are eligible to receive this support through their school environment with funding for a consultancy service being provided through NSO (Non Schools Organisation).
The service covers the three educational sectors (state, Catholic and independent schools) and extends throughout Queensland. The Outreach program works in partnership with schools to complement the support already in place. While parent permission is required, the primary aim of the service is to support educational staff. Parents are encouraged to participate in this process, however any parent contact or involvement must be organised through the school.
This funding is supplementary to that provided for students with disabilities by their educational sector and has been specifically allocated for the delivery of multidisciplinary school support from the LET'S TALK Outreach team.
The LET’S TALK Outreach team provides multidisciplinary consultative support to educational teams on site. It is a funding requirement that members of the LET’S TALK Outreach team:
- have direct contact with each student and
- participate in a follow-up meeting with the educational support team where feedback and recommendations are made.
The support that will be provided is based on the needs of the educational setting, its location and the needs of staff. A range of flexible options are offered, including:
- programming support;
- contributions to the Individual Educational Plan process;
- contributions to the Educational Adjustment Program;
- informal screenings;
- facilitated support sessions and
The allocated funding will cover the cost of a consultation once every 12 to 18 months.
